How to recruit without agency fees
A definition:
Recruitment = ‘refers to the process of attracting, screening, and selecting qualified people for a job at an organisation or firm.’ – wikipedia
This is one of a series of articles by Andrew Fisher – CEO of Media C2C
This article takes the first and most commonly quoted ‘problem’ with Media Recruitment- that of COST. Cost comes in many guises – time taken by hiring managers in selection, time and direct costs in training of new recruits and costly recruitment fees. The most high profile and direct cost is the recruitment fee. This is typically invoiced on the day the recruit joins or sometimes before.
How to recruit without agency fees
The recruitment market has changed significantly over the last few years with many media companies taking greater control of their own recruitment and relying less and less on the traditional agency route to find candidates.
This has been especially noticeable within the mid market at salaries of £30,000 - £60,000. This is a ‘painful’ area of recruitment with agencies fees at 15 – 25% and with resulting costs into five figures per hire. Increased commercial pressures have led many companies to developing their own ‘direct recruitment strategy’.
So what can you do to take more control and spend less?
• Calculate how much you currently spend on recruitment agency fees each year
• Set a target for reducing this by 50% over the next year
• Develop a ‘direct recruitment strategy’ – this could include:
• Direct recruitment advertising
• Direct searching and approaching candidates
• Developing an internal referral scheme to foster recommendations
• Developing, promoting and strongly branding your own ‘join us’ section of your website
The above should be supported by a company-wide commitment to developing a database of applicants that apply, have been previously shortlisted and / or are considered potentially suitable targets for future hires.
A ‘direct recruitment strategy’ approach is not without effort and is not an easy option. However, many businesses can no longer afford the reliance on agency fees and are instead reducing agency costs and taking control of their brand to become more cost efficient and effective.
