How to perform well at interview

This is one of a series of articles by Andrew Fisher – CEO of Media C2C

You will have researched the company, the people you are meeting and also reread your application form and cv. You have arrived early and are relaxed and waiting in the reception area. So what happens next and over the next hour or two is key to your success.

How to perform well at interview - Here are the Media C2C tips...

You are being assessed from the moment you arrive till the moment you leave so greet the receptionist warmly and positively, clearly stating who you are and who you are meeting. Smile and say thank you.

Whilst waiting in reception do not accept offers of drinks – carrying drinks, shaking hands and / or walking though many sets of doors and / or upstairs to the interview room is not a good combination.

Speak clearly and speak up, do not mumble and be aware of your body language. It is not sensible to cross your arms as this may appear defensive also be conscious of how you use your hands and resist scratching, touching your face or pointing. An open friendly and relaxed style is the aim.

The maintenance of eye contact is also important – if speaking with a panel you should focus on the questioner but share eye contact with all others present. You should try to ensure that you engage with everyone if there is more than one interviewer.

When answering questions stick the points you wish to make – often the use of ‘3 points’ can be effective. Eg ‘What attracted you to this job?’ – I have always admired and been interested in joining (company applied for) and this role is very attractive because it provides an opportunity for me to (1) contribute at a more strategic level, (2) manage a growing team and (3) develop my skills and experience.

When answering questions refer to your cv and provide examples of where you have succeeded and detail your relevant achievements. Resist talking for too long.

If you do not know the answer say so – resist bluffing and instead demonstrate where you would find the answer. This can demonstrate your honesty and willingness to learn.

Do not argue, interrupt, criticise previous employers or individuals or swear. Be careful to speak with a range of tone and pace, keep their interest and do not rush your answers. It is best to LISTEN well, pause and then give a considered answer.

It is important to be clearly focused, committed to the role / company and enthusiastic at all times.

Try to stay relaxed, positive and smile.

At the end of the interview – say thank you and smile, ask when you will hear and what the next stage might be. Tell them you are very keen and offer a firm handshake.

Finally say thank you to the receptionist and smile...
